New Science Books To Be Available Free Online
fm6 writes "Bloomsbury Publishing, best known for the Harry Potter books, has announced a new series of science books that will be available for free online. Bloomsbury thinks they can make enough money off of hard-copy sales to turn a 'small profit.' The online version will be covered by a Creative Commons license which allows free non-commercial use. They've already had some success with the one book they've published this way, Larry Lessig's 'Remix: Making Art and Commerce thrive in the Hybrid Economy.' The series, 'Science, Ethics and Innovation,' will be edited by Sir John Sulston, Nobel prize winner and one of the architects of the Human Genome Project

Irish Undergraduate Awards
The Irish Undergraduate Awards were launched in October 2008 and the inaugural winners will be announced in October 2009.
The deadline for submissions is May 31st 2009. So far there have been 1076 submissions from across the 9 universities on the island of Ireland. 23 of these submissions have been from UL students.

To Tell the Age of a Horse.
To tell the age of any horse, inspect the lower jaw, of course,
The six front teeth the tale will tell, Ane every doubt and fear dispel.
Two middle 'nippers' you behold
Before the colt is two years old;
Before eight weeks two more will come;
Eight months the 'corners' cut the gum.
The outside grooves will disappear
From middle two in just one year,
In two years from the second pair;
In three the 'corners', too, are bare.
At two, the middle 'nippers' drop;
At three, the second pair can't stop;
When four years old, the third pair goes;
At five, a full new set he shows.
The deep black spots will pass from view
At six years from the middle two;
The second pair at seven years;
At eight, the spot each 'corner' clears.
From middle 'nippers', upper jaw,
At nine the black spots will withdraw,
The second pair at ten are white;
Eleven finds the 'corners' light.
As time goes on, the horsemen know
The oval teeth three-sided grow;
They longer get, project before,
Till twenty, when we know no more.

Apple iTunes U
iTunes U is a way of distributing lectures, podcasts, documents, etc both to registered students and to people who just happen by. Essentially, it's a streaming server, but the iTunes software makes it all work smoothly.

No database access Sunday 11th Jan - Library Building closed
For your information
The Library will be closed on Sun 11th Jan in order to facilitate the upgrading of the University electrical supply. Access to library electronic resources will be unavailable too.
However, the Library will be open on Sat 10th (10:00 – 19:00) and re-open on Mon 12th as normal.
